The Technical Product Manager (TPM) plays a pivotal and hands-on role as a product leader in translating market and client needs into technically sound product capabilities. This role leads both the internal technical product management (such as, architecture alignment, roadmap and delivery coordination) as well as leading the external market product strategy (such as, competitive insights, customer feedback, and product positioning). This will be a critical role in bridging product capabilities and technical teams throughout the product lifecycle—from early-stage feasibility to design oversight and delivery—to ensure scalable, performant, and interoperable solutions with deep alignment to engineering and architecture.
Responsibilities:
  • Define and own the product strategy for Smile’s Core CDR platform components — including data ingestion pipelines, data quality (master data management, enrichment, etc), persistence layer, and administration capabilities.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to perform in-depth technical analysis to identify gaps between product and market/client needs, particularly in interoperability, performance, scalability, and standards compliance.
  • Translate architectural patterns and operational needs into clear, actionable product requirements.
  • Participate in architecture and code review discussions to validate feasibility, scalability, and maintainability of proposed solutions.
  • Maintain a deep technical understanding of the stack (Java, HAPI FHIR, Kubernetes, Postgres, Kafka, etc.) to reason trade-offs and guide prioritization.
  • Champion product capabilities related to data quality, deduplication, enrichment, and lifecycle management across ingest and persistence flows.
  • Support backlog refinement and delivery oversight by providing technical context, architectural input, and prioritization guidance throughout the implementation lifecycle.
  • Support architecture and design discussions to ensure product features are technically feasible, secure, and aligns with agile methodology and long-term platform strategy.
  • Participate in architecture discussions to validate feasibility, scalability, and maintainability of proposed solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to ensure high-fidelity execution of the product roadmap.
  • Support cross-functional teams and leaders in developing product communication materials (presentations, articles, white papers), product sales strategies, training, and internal and external demos.
  • Conduct competitive research to benchmark and identify differentiators for specific platform capabilities
  • Evangelize product and/or features to both internal cross-functional teams and external customers, hosting customer conversations and attending/presenting at relevant events.
  • Guide customer conversations and solutioning discussions as needed to validate technical direction and clarify platform capabilities.
  • Enable the success of Smile’s product teams by ensuring platform capabilities are well documented, versioned, and consumable.
  • Serve as a technical resource to unblock delivery teams, balancing client requirements with architectural and operational considerations.
  • Accountable for ensuring that all working hours are accurately reported in Netsuite on a daily or weekly basis, that the majority of (if not all) hours are tracked as billable and that the project management tool in Netsuite is properly and fully utilized.
  • Tracking and reporting of billable hours is a critical aspect of project management and delivery to our customers and this is a major area of accountability.
  • Comply with the privacy, security and confidentiality policies.
  • Hold all confidential information in trust and strict confidence and ensure that it shall be used only for the purposes required to fulfill employment obligations, and shall not be used for any other purpose, or disclosed to any third party. A breach of policy or misuse of information could result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience in a Technical Product Management, Software Engineering, or Platform Product Ownership role, or related technical role in software product development.
  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Health Informatics, with a strong technical component, or a related field.
  • Proven experience delivering complex software products or platforms, ideally in healthcare or enterprise environments.
  • Strong understanding of FHIR, FHIR / HAPI FHIR and RESTful API standards, Data integration, ETL, and data persistence patterns, Authentication and authorization frameworks (OAuth2, OIDC, SAML), and Healthcare interoperability (FHIR, HL7 v2, CDA, etc.) and terminology standards (LOINC, SNOMED, ICD-10).
  • Experience with CI/CD, Software Release cycles, and Software Development Lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to review architecture/design proposals, translate use cases into technical requirements, and guide implementation discussions.
  • Ability to read, write, and reason through code — enough to understand architecture proposals, review pull requests, or validate technical decisions.
  • Demonstrated consultative experience including facilitating meetings and communications with executive-level clients, prospects, and partners.
  • Experience collaborating with engineering and architecture teams in cloud-native environments (e.g., Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform).
  • Critical thinking skills with a creative solution-oriented mindset.
  • Self-driven, proactive, and results-oriented, with effective time management and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems or data platforms, preferred.
